Soon you will be able to watch Live TV channels for free on your smartphone. For this you will neither need any internet nor will have to take any plan. Yes, the government has made preparations for this. According to reports, the government is soon going to implement the Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) broadcasting system. For this, trials are also being conducted in more than 19 cities. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting along with Prasar Bharati is preparing the complete outline for implementing this system.
What is direct to mobile technology?
This is a satellite based service, in which live TV channels will be shown on the mobile phone through satellite. People will be able to watch live TV channels as well as education content etc. on the phone without any active internet. In this the user will not need data. According to the report, this service is currently being tested on feature phones i.e. phones with keypad. Later it can be expanded to smartphones also.
Trial started in more than 19 cities
According to the report, this technology is being tested in more than 19 cities. Prasar Bharati, Sankhya Labs and IIT Kanpur are testing it together. This direct-to-mobile service will work to deliver digital content in those areas where there is no proper internet access. Also, people are not able to watch videos due to expensive data.
Initial tests conducted in cities like Delhi and Bangalore found that it is possible to send direct video and content to mobile. Due to this technology, big events can be easily livestreamed without internet. Since the advent of smart TV, satellite channels have almost become extinct. Most of the people have started consuming content through smart TV and OTT.
What is the challenge?
Direct-to-mobile i.e. D2M service will work on a specific frequency 470 to 582 MHz. The government has given approval for this. However, telecom companies are opposing this decision of the government. TV and radio broadcasters are happy with this decision of the government, because they will get new viewers. Telecom operators say that if this spectrum band is given to D2M, then mobile spectrum will not be increased for 5G or 6G in future. This may affect mobile internet services.
