TRAI has prepared the new Telecom Consumer Protection Regulation Bill 2026. A draft has been prepared for the 13th amendment in this bill, in which crores of telecom users of the country are going to get big benefits. In this bill, provisions have been made for telecom companies to launch cheap recharge plans, so that every mobile user can avail the benefits of telecom services. Last year also, the Telecom Authority had directed telecom companies to launch voice and SMS only plans, after which Airtel, Jio, Vi and BSNL launched voice only recharge plans.
Plans should not be made only for food supply
However, TRAI is not happy with the voice only plans offered by telecom companies. These plans are slightly cheaper than the data plans, due to which users are not getting the benefit. These 84 days and year long plans of telecom companies are available at Rs 100 to 200 less than the data plans. Besides, telecom companies have also launched data plans comparable to this plan in the market, due to which users prefer to buy plans with data.
Instructions to launch special tariff
In the new draft, TRAI has asked telecom companies to launch a special tariff voucher, in which only voice and SMS facilities can be provided. This voucher should be cheaper than the regular plan. TRAI said that the price of voice and SMS only plans launched by telecom companies is very high, which has been beneficial after removing the data. Therefore the changes made earlier are not enough. Therefore a new proposal has been prepared.
Crores of users benefit
TRAI said that in the new proposed draft, special tariff voucher has been mentioned, in which users can get the facility of voice and SMS and for this the users do not have to spend much. These plans should be launched at a much cheaper price than the existing voice and SMS only plans. The Department of Telecommunications wants transparency in recharge plans so that users do not have to buy forced bundles. Telecom companies and stakeholders have been asked to comment on this proposal by April 28.
