Private photo leaked on social media will be deleted within 2 hours, government made rules strict

The government has once again tightened IT rules. Private photos/videos going viral on social media will now be deleted within 2 hours. Now you will not have to wait for several days to remove it. The government has given strict orders to social media platforms regarding this. Instructions have been issued to social media platforms like Instagram, YouTube, X, Facebook regarding this. However, no statement has been issued by the companies regarding this at present.

Why did the government take this decision?

In the last few years, deepfakes and AI generated content are increasingly being spread on social media platforms. Fake AI photos and videos of people are being spread on social media through AI. Especially the pictures of women and girls are being defaced and made viral on social media. Cyber criminals are blackmailing people through these pictures and videos. Because of this people are becoming victims of online trolling and mental harassment.

Recently, in view of this threat, the government has made changes in IT Rules 2026 and made it strict. Under the new rules, if a user complains about non-consensual intimate or deepfake photos on any platform, then social media companies will have to take immediate action. In many cases, the content has been asked to be removed from the platform within 2 hours.

At the same time, in case of government or court order, action will have to be taken and removed within 3 hours. According to a new report, 75% of such content leaked on social media is being removed within just two hours of receiving complaints. Earlier for this one had to wait from 24 hours to several days. Social media platforms have been instructed to create fast moderation tools, AI detection tools and emergency response teams for this.

Strictness on AI content also

In the new IT rules, strictness has been imposed regarding AI content. According to the new rule, AI generated content has been asked to be published with clearly visible labels, so that people can easily understand that the photo or video is not genuine. At the same time, marking on synthetic or AI generated media has been made mandatory. The government has increased the responsibility of social media platforms in the new rules. If any user complains about the content spread on social media, then the company will have to take immediate action.
