Create Course Certificates in WordPress (Free + Templates)

You did it. The course is live, the lessons are recorded, the quizzes actually work. Then your first student reaches the endโ€ฆ and gets nothing. A silent โ€œmark completeโ€ and thatโ€™s that.

Thatโ€™s a missed opportunity. A course certificate gives students something to show for the hours they put in, and it gives them one more reason to reach the finish line in the first place.

The best part? You donโ€™t need an expensive LMS to do it. (LMS stands for Learning Management System, the software that runs your online courses. Sounds boring, but itโ€™s useful to know the term.) You can create personalized course certificates in WordPress completely free.

This guide walks through the whole process: enabling the certificate builder, designing your own certificate with dynamic fields like student name and completion date, and attaching it to a course. It also covers two alternative routes in case you want something different.

Letโ€™s jump right in! ๐Ÿš€

Why bother with course certificates?

Are certificates a must-have? Honestly, no. Plenty of successful courses skip them. But hereโ€™s what they quietly do for you:

  • They give students a reason to finish. Online courses have a well-known drop-off problem: people start excited, then life happens. A certificate waiting at the end turns โ€œIโ€™ll finish somedayโ€ into an actual goal. Itโ€™s a small psychological nudge, but nudges add up. ๐ŸŽฏ
  • Theyโ€™re proof students can show off. A finished certificate ends up on LinkedIn profiles, resumes, and office walls. Every share is quiet, free marketing for your course. ๐Ÿ’ผ
  • They make your course feel legit. A $12 course with a proper certificate feels like a real program, not a playlist of videos someone happened to pay for.
  • Some audiences flat-out expect them. If you teach anything work-related (compliance, software skills, professional development), students often need completion proof for their employer.

None of this requires fancy software. Letโ€™s set it up. ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ

What youโ€™ll need

The shopping list is short:

  • A WordPress site. If your course already lives on WordPress, youโ€™re set.
  • The free Masteriyo plugin. Itโ€™s the tool this tutorial uses. And yes, full disclosure: Masteriyo is one of our own products here at Themeisle. The recommendation stands for a simple reason: a genuinely free certificate builder is rarer than youโ€™d think in LMS-land.
  • One finished course to attach the certificate to. Donโ€™t have one yet? Hereโ€™s how to create an online course with WordPress first.

Now the honest fine print, because itโ€™s better heard up front. The free version includes the full certificate builder and one starter template. Masteriyo currently ships both the classic certificate builder (the flow this tutorial uses) and a newer drag-and-drop V2 builder, which limits free users to 2 published certificates. The full template gallery, QR verification codes, custom font uploads, and email delivery are part of Masteriyo Pro: $149/year at the intro price, renewing at the regular $299/year. Everything in the steps below works free, and the paid bits get flagged as they come up:

Step 1: Install Masteriyo and enable the Certificate Builder

First, install the plugin. In your WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins โ†’ Add New and search for โ€œMasteriyo.โ€ Click Install, then Activate.

Certificates in Masteriyo live in a free addon, so thereโ€™s one more toggle to flip:

  1. Go to Masteriyo โ†’ Addons.
  2. Find Certificate Builder in the list.
  3. Click the toggle to enable it.

Thatโ€™s it: no license key, no account, no credit card. Youโ€™ll now see a Certificates item in the Masteriyo menu.

Step 2: Choose a template (or start from scratch)

Head to Masteriyo โ†’ Certificates and click Add New Certificate. Youโ€™ll land on the template chooser:

Hereโ€™s the gallery, and hereโ€™s the honest part. On the free plan, you get the Blank Slate plus exactly one starter template. Everything else in this grid is Pro. Itโ€™s a bit like a donut shop where you can only have the plain one.

The advice here? Pick the Blank Slate anyway. Building your own takes about ten minutes, and you end up with exactly the design you want, which is exactly what the next step walks through.

๐Ÿ’ก PRO TIP: If the templates donโ€™t load (or the grid looks empty), hit the Refresh Template button in the top-right corner and give it a few seconds.

Step 3: Design your certificate in the editor

Select the blank slate (or the free sample) and open it for editing. First, give your certificate a name. This example uses โ€œAI Copywriting Certificate,โ€ named after the demo course used throughout this tutorial:

The editor is Gutenberg-based, so if youโ€™ve ever written a blog post in WordPress, you already know how to drive it. Click things, type, move blocks around. Same deal, fancier output.

A solid certificate layout is simple:

  • A heading. โ€œCertificate of Achievementโ€ never goes out of style.
  • A โ€œproudly presented toโ€ line.
  • The Student Name block, big and center-stage.
  • The Course Title and Course Completion Date blocks underneath.
  • A signature image or your logo at the bottom.

The magic is in those dynamic blocks. You donโ€™t type anyoneโ€™s name; you open the block inserter (the + icon), search for โ€œStudent Name,โ€ and drop the block in. Masteriyo fills in the real name for each student when their certificate is generated, and the same trick works for the course title and dates. The free dynamic fields cover the essentials (student name, course title, and completion date), and those three are really all a good certificate needs.

Two blocks you wonโ€™t find on the free plan: QR Code and Verification Code. Those generate a scannable code and a unique alphanumeric ID, so anyone can check that a certificate is genuine. Both are part of the paid plans, and if you issue certificates for professional training, thatโ€™s the one Pro feature genuinely worth considering.

Want different typography? Click a block and open its Typography settings, where youโ€™ll find several built-in fonts to choose from. Uploading your own font files is one of the Pro features from the table above.

When youโ€™re happy with the design, hit Preview in the top-right corner to check the result, then save.

Step 4: Attach the certificate to your course

A certificate template does nothing until you attach it to a course. Almost there:

  1. Go to Masteriyo โ†’ Courses and open your course for editing.
  2. Navigate to Settings โ†’ Certificate.
  3. Flip the toggle to enable the certificate.
  4. Select your certificate from the dropdown.
  5. Optional: enable Allow Certificate Sharing so students can show it off.
  6. Click Update to save.

Hereโ€™s the demo course in question, a humble $12 course about AI copywriting:

From now on, anyone who completes this course gets the certificate. Done and done.

๐Ÿ†˜ Possible issue: If your certificate doesnโ€™t show up in the course dropdown, go back to Masteriyo โ†’ Certificates and make sure itโ€™s actually saved and published. Draft certificates stay invisible.

What your students see

So what does all this look like from the other side?

The moment a student completes the course, a Download Certificate link appears for them. The certificate comes out as a PDF, with their real name, the course title, and the completion date already filled in.

Itโ€™s also waiting on their account page under Your Certificates, with Preview and Download buttons. Handy when someone loses the file six months later and emails you in a panic. (You know they will.)

If you enabled sharing, students also get a Share your certificate option on the course page. And on the paid plans, thereโ€™s an option to email the certificate automatically right after course completion. Nice, but hardly essential.

Two alternative routes worth knowing

Masteriyo isnโ€™t the only way to skin this cat. Two honest alternatives:

1. A different LMS with certificates built in

If youโ€™re already running another LMS, or still considering one, check its certificate situation first:

  • LearnDash includes a certificate builder on every plan. The catch: thereโ€™s no free version. Plans start at $259/year (Essentials). It can be worth it if you also want its deeper quizzing and reporting; hereโ€™s our full Masteriyo vs LearnDash comparison.
  • Tutor LMS has a free core plugin, but its drag-and-drop certificate builder, templates, and QR verification sit in the paid plans, starting at $199/year for one site. It earned a spot in our best free LMS plugins roundup for other reasons.

2. The manual PDF route

Or skip plugins entirely. Design a certificate once in Canva or Google Slides, duplicate it per student, type in their name, export as PDF, and email it over.

For a handful of students, this is genuinely fine. But it doesnโ€™t scale. At 50 students youโ€™re running a small certificate factory by hand, with no automation, no verification, and no download link waiting in anyoneโ€™s account.

For most course sites, letting the LMS handle it wins by knockout. But now you know your options.

Final thoughts

Letโ€™s recap:

  • Certificates give students a reason to finish and something to share: cheap motivation for them, free marketing for you.
  • The free Masteriyo plugin handles the whole flow: the builder, one starter template, dynamic name/course/date fields, and a download link the moment students finish.
  • The template gallery, QR and verification codes, custom fonts, and email delivery are Pro: $149/year intro, renewing at $299/year. Nice to have, not required.
  • Already on LearnDash or Tutor LMS? Certificates exist there too, just behind different price tags.

The bottom line: install the free version, build your own design on the blank slate, and see how far it takes you. For most courses, thatโ€™s everything youโ€™ll ever need. And if you end up wanting QR validation later, the upgrade isnโ€™t going anywhere.
